Rømø 2023.

I love being on Rømø.
A flat, windswept island in the Wadden Sea. Just sand, water, and dunes—nothing else.

And yet, it’s the place where I’ve taken more photos than anywhere else in the world. Like this one—a snapshot of the endless ways the sky, the sand, and the sea can collide.

Shot on film.
Captured with a Hasselblad 6x6 medium format camera on Kodak Portra 400. You can see part of the film negative’s edge—orange numbers on the left marking the film type, along with the two iconic V-shaped notches unique to Hasselblad cameras. Those notches are left on every negative.

Some say the “V” stands for Victor Hasselblad himself—the man behind the legend.

It was the sky that made me point the camera towards the clouds, and only then did I notice the migrating birds flying in a V-formation.

I hadn’t planned on shooting that day. It was cold, the wind was brutal, and I was just walking—camera slung over my shoulder, as always. I took a few shots of the bay, the sea, the shoreline. Nothing special.

Then the wind picked up. I turned, and there it was—the sky, heavy and dramatic, the beach lit up, dune grass cutting through the stormy light. I took a couple of quick shots, unsure if they’d amount to anything.

Back home, scrolling through the images, this one stood out immediately. Seeing it in print, I knew—it’s something special. And I’m glad I had my camera that day.
