This portrait was chosen by an international jury for “Portrait Now 2021” at Fredensborg Palace, where it was exhibited during the competition. Later, it was displayed at the Ljungberg Museum of Modern Art in Sweden.
Hans Henning lives alone on the same farm where he was born, north of Holbæk. He has never left, except for his time as a Royal Life Guard, a chapter of his life he still holds close. His land is small, just enough to sustain his five pigs, six cows, his dog Balder, and a whole family of cats.
He lives by old virtues. He fixes what’s broken, buys nothing new, and sources most of his groceries through dumpster diving at the local supermarket.
This portrait was taken in his kitchen, where he is most at home—surrounded by his beloved cats.
